Shield booster seats are for children weighing 30 to 40 pounds. They are used when a car's rear seat has lap belts and no shoulder belts.

When a lap/shoulder belt is in the back seat, you can use the base as a belt-positioning booster by removing the shield (if possible). This way, the seat can be used for children up to 60 pounds. Be sure to read the instructions that come with the safety seat.

For more information on child safety seats, see the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, Governor's Traffic Safety Committee's website.
