Strategies for Preparing a Family to Participate (2)
Even Start projects must prepare families to fully commit to and participate in all components of the program. This period of preparation may take from one to three months. During this time, numerous activities should take place which address the following:
- A detailed description of program services. Projects should provide an orientation to parents outlining the goals of Even Start so that they understand the level of commitment necessary to make gains.
- Written program policies on enrollment, attendance, and continuing eligibility. Projects may want parents to sign contracts addressing these matters.
- Family needs assessment. Staff complete an index of needs form along with other program documentation.
- Literacy skills assessment. To ensure eligibility, staff assesses parents' literacy skills.
- Goal setting. Projects work with parents to identify long- and short-term goals for them and their children.
- Staff and families identify positive reasons for participation.
- Staff and families identify possible barriers to participation as well as their solutions.
- Staff and families discuss expectations of each other.
- Referrals to counseling or other services not provided through Even Start (these may include housing, immigration, health services, etc.)
- Dissemination of written material to parents in their language and literacy level about the program.
